SPARTAN Q & A | By Evan Higgins --- Hockey Memes is a popular Twitter account run out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, that was started April 4, 2012, and currently has over 90,000 followers. Hockey Memes tweets edited photos of hockey moments around the world. The Dart's Evan Higgins interviewed one of the two founders of the account about running one of the most popular Twitter accounts in Atlantic Canada. He would like to remain anonymous in keeping with this feature of his Twitter account. --- Q: What prompted you to start an account? A: Me and my brother were playing road hockey and we started talking about how many bad twitter accounts get crazy amounts of followers and decided that we're actually pretty funny, why not start our own? It all just started from there. Q: Did you ever imagine that Hockey Memes would gain this much popularity? A: No, there are many other hockey accounts on twitter and most of them get around 10,000 followers. I thought we would peak at like 20,000 and I was happy about it. --- Q: Does Hockey Memes make you any money? A: Someone offered us money to post click-through ads but we turned it down. We didn't want to annoy anyone that follows us. So we don't take money but we have been given free clothing and small gifts from Gong Show Hockey and Beauty Status [two twitter accounts that make money selling hockey-themed clothing]. --- Q: Have you ever considered selling your account as a whole? A: Not really. People have made offers, some of them higher than a thousand dollars, but we turned them down. We're just having a lot of fun with it and we don't want to give it up. --- Q: Have you ever considered selling your own Hockey Memes clothing, like sweaters or hats? A: Not really, there's a stigma against the word memes in regular life. We have thought of selling [a line of] clothes but without our twitter account name on it. We'd have to come up with a new logo and use Hockey Memes to promote it. --- Q: Personally, what is your favourite hockey team and how do you stop that from putting a bias on your tweets? A: The Florida Panthers, and since they're so bad it hasn't really affected my tweets at all. My brother has a different favourite team as well so it's easy to keep the bias out of the tweets. Most of our tweets are about Canadian teams too, so that helps. We try not to put any bias on the tweets. --- Q: What are the future plans for Hockey Memes? A: We're just going to run the account until we get bored and sell it. But for now we're still having a lot of fun with it. Comments are closed.
