EVENTS | By Alex Pardy --- Easy to assume that a mini rock show would get by the average eye, but this one you couldn’t miss. On Saturday, January 23, in CD Heaven (you know, that little store behind Shoppers Drug Mart, the one you'd need to be paying attention to where you were going in order to see it), a mini Alternative Rock Show was put on for a big crowd. Great entertainment, tough decision. EVENTS | By Alex Pardy --- On Wednesday January 20, just before exams, DHS held our qualifying round for HRM’s annual Acts for Aids event. EVENTS | By Alex Pardy --- This year Dartmouth High is hosting the annual Arts for Hearts event. We are currently collecting art work from the High Schools in the HRM and then are auctioning them off to members of the community. The money we raise this year will be donated to Brigadoon Village to try to send a kid to camp for free. ALBUM REVIEW | By Eric Martin --- At the age of 22, Tom Odell has created something familiar and timeless. His debut full-length album, Long Way Down, entered the UK album charts before it was officially released in the late spring of 2013. The collection of folk and indie pop piano ballads are comparable to the songs of the great Elton John with a darkness and subtle catchy Coldplay vibe. EVENTS | By Hannah Prozenko
--- On April 29, the grade 11 students of Dartmouth High School took part in their first-ever Arts Conference. Appropriately named the SPARC (Spartan Arts Conference), the event allowed students to explore the artistic side of life. DRAMA | By Hannah Prozenko --- It was a close call between the Dartmouth High and Halifax West improv teams on February 22 [2014] as the two troupes battled it out at St. Matthew's Church in Halifax for the title of Canadian Improv East Coast Regional Champions. Whichever team took home the trophy would also take home the chance to compete in the Canadian Improv Games (C.I.G.) in Ottawa. MOVIE REVIEW | By Nick Jennex --- 42, directed by Brian Helgeland, is the re-telling of the historical and true story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player to ever play in the Major League. Robinson is a sporting hero for many despite having to endure relentless racism on and off the field. The film mainly focuses on the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers season when Robinson broke the barrier. EVENTS | By Hannah Prozenko --- What is it like to write a play? Should you narrate every little detail or leave everything up to the audience? Emil Sher answered these questions and more during his walkthrough presentation to Dartmouth High School students about the creative process used for writing a play. Emil used his piece of theatrical art, Hana's Suitcase (based off the non-fiction book by Karen Levine), to give the students an example of different kinds of artistic details found in a play. |
